Can You Summarize Your Business In One Line?

It is said that a Christopher Nolan movie (director of such hits as InterstellarThe Dark Knight TrilogyInception) always contains one scene where a character summarizes the entire film in a line or two. Let me give you one such example:

“People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy, and I can’t do that as Bruce Wayne. As a man, I’m flesh and blood. I can be ignored. I can be destroyed. But as a symbol, as a symbol I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting.” — Bruce Wayne

And so begins the terrifying and wonderful arc known as the Dark Knight Trilogy. Other movies from his canon likewise show a character summarizing said movie as a whole. A simple scene, a few simple lines…and there you have the whole movie.

This got me to thinking…and yes, this post deals with you and your business leadership, not movies(!!), can you summarize your company, your purpose, your intent for your business in one, simple sentence?

Okay, I’ll give you two…in two sentences summarize the entire thrust of your business. If you have not boiled down your business to two, wonderfully packed sentences, then you really need to consider the direction of leadership you have taken.

Oftentimes in the industry we call this a mission statement or a vision statement. Actually, these are in fact two different things, but for the sake of discussion we’ll collapse them into one. Do you have a mission statement for yourself in the midst of your industry? Do you have a mission statement for the business you lead?

Can you adequately and concisely sum up the nature of your business in two sentences for anyone who asks? For if you can, than you have clarity as to what you are doing.
