Power Project Finance Course Overview

To meet the rapidly growing global demands for energy, particularly in the fast-growing emerging markets of China, India, Brazil, as well as other markets in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, hundreds of billions of dollars in project finance will be needed to bring online the new energy capacity. Even at the low end of estimates the large amounts of capital investment required remains well beyond the reach of the governments and capital markets. Project finance and private capital will therefore play a critical role in meeting this need for investment.

Renewable energy is poised to play a major role in meeting the global demand for energy. Investment in sustainable energy has grown rapidly in recent years from $27.9 billion in 2004, to $70.9 billion in 2006, to an estimated $85 billion in 2007. Total investment in energy generation worldwide was estimated at $125 billion in 2006, with renewable energy representing 25% or $30.8 billion. Adding in the technology and manufacturing capacity investment of $25.2 billion received in 2006, the total investment in the renewable energy power sector stood at $59 billion. While on-shore wind energy projects have been increasingly supported through limited- and non-recourse project finance, project finance for renewable energy overall is still in the beginning stage.

While the U.S. and EU account for 70% of the global investment in sustainable energy, investment in emerging markets grew from $4.2 billion in 2005, to $15 billion in 2006. China, India, and Brazil have become both major producers and consumers of sustainable energy.

Carbon funds are set to play a big role in project finance for renewable energy projects. According to UNEP, as of March 2007 carbon funds totaled $11.8 billion, an increase of $4.7 billion since September 2006. Most of this funding, an estimated 85% of the new funding raised, is being invested the development and commercialization of projects rather, than for the purchase of carbon credits, and the lion’s share of projects (64% of 1,825 projects) are renewable energy projects such as wind, solar, and biomass projects.
