This course is designed to meet market and regulatory demand for accurate accounting and reporting techniques for financial markets securities and various derivative products – therefore both US GAAP and IAS issues will be analysed.
You will walk through the various types of financial market derivatives, hybrids, structured products (which incorporate elements of derivatives within them), along with their accounting, credit and associated risks.
The key focus of the course will be on the accounting treatment and the risk implications of each product within the overall treasury accounting framework.
Course learning objectives and outcomes
Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:
- Appreciate the historical context from which both the FASB 133 and
the IAS 39 financial derivative standards emerged - Understand when and when not the accounting standards apply
- Distinguish between derivatives from financial instrument accounting
- Revise valuation methodologies and practice in light of the standard
- Distinguish between a fair value, cash flow and ineffective hedges
- Be conversant with the respective product life cycles
- Understand and appreciate that both standards are not just disclosure standards
- Construct a checklist of process & policy issues that must be addressed
