Catching Fire: Bezos Answers Tough Questions On the Fire Phone

The Amazon Fire phone was a huge flop when it was first released. Now, months after its release, it’s still a flop. Nothing has changed.

As the months wore on, Amazon became a bit quiet about its phone. No longer did the phone appear on the website, and mentions of it in social media became a bit more quiet.

Now, months after its release Jeff Bezos sat down for an interview with the editor of Business Insider. What can we learn from his leadership style and pr and media relations?

Well, for one thing, a lot. It was very clear that the questions were not going to go away and that answers would have to be forthcoming in some form or another.

Now, the answer that Bezos gives is a testimony to his leadership and his pr team. What’s his answer? Well, it’s essentially the same that he gave for the kindle when it was first released: There are some bumps along the way, but we’ll get it sooner rather than later.

This is a very interesting answer. For one, it reminds us that we’ve been in this position before with Amazon, and now look at where they are today with the kindle. Two, it shows us that Amazon is channeling a story of eventual success to address the Fire issue. In essence, what they are saying is that we’ll get it.

Is there something to be learned in how we, as CEOs, face the media and public relations? Surely there is, and we can learn from Amazon and Bezos today.
