Why Having Co-CEOs Isn’t a Bad Idea

In recent years, a number of extremely successful companies have come to market with a unique leadership structure, namely with two chief executives at the helm. While the very concept of a company operating efficiently with co-CEOs at the head may seem like a contradiction in terms, there are actually a few different benefits to dividing executive responsibilities between two people.

For one thing, it allows for the sharing of what can sometimes be an overwhelming workload. As opposed to a single leader, co-CEOs can divide up stress inducing and time-consuming activities like project management and client outreach. That way, all the necessities will be taken care of in something that more closely resembles a 40 hour work week.

Another advantage to the dual CEO approach is that it will allow a company to benefit from being headed up by leaders who specialize in different aspects of business. For example, a CEO that is excellent at communicating with the media, the board and the rank-and-file could complement a CEO whose strengths lie in analytics, strategic planning and logistics.

Also, forcing one chief executive to clearly articulate their vision for the organization to another chief executive before presenting it to the company and the larger marketplace will only result in the kind of grounded thinking and nuanced execution that is conducive to creating the best possible outcomes.
