Majority of companies run on the idea of perfect conformity. In which employees are expected to follow directions in precise manner as well as finishing tasks in a safe specific matter. Conformity is a double edge sword. On one hand, it lowers the risk of tasks being half-baked or certain detail work could be overlooked in which causes problems further down the road. Due to having no wiggle room to speak; conformity makes it harder for certain problems to be resolved with normal means. Thus “thinking out of the box” helps either solve or entirely avoid problems all together. It is up to leaders to not only change such linear thoughts and lead by example; but to actually encourage staff to not only develop further in the company but also among themselves.
Key Takeaways:
- Conformity is a good thing when establishing expectations and running the company smoothly, but allow room for creativity.
- Being allowed to have a different opinion, perhaps an employee sees something in a new way you haven’t considered.
- Help each employee hone their skill set by identifying what makes them tick. Figure out what they are really great at, and use that to create better results.
“Consciously or unconsciously, the expectation of conformity keeps the 30-year trend of dominant employee disengagement alive.”
