Leadership is not Winning

There are times when we look at leading as a CEO as a competitive game of football. You look at the pitch, and all you can see is an opportunity to score. You want to drive the ball forward, and you want to put it through that net.

What does this lead us to? Well, for one thing it leads us to try and push no matter what the cost. But is this good leadership? The obvious answer is no.

We do not want to become known as leaders who will sacrifice one another simply for the sake of the win. People will begin to regard us with a certain disregard and in fact shun working with us. This is not the type of reputation you want to formulate for yourself, for it will have bearing on not only your company’s name, but yours as well.

Take a look at one story of a coach who decided that winning was all that mattered. In many ways, this story is akin to what oftentimes happens in leadership. Learn from these mistakes and grow past them.
