It is said that men are made in the military, and surely from today’s article, leaders are born, forged and honed there as well. What does military training and being a CEO have to do with each other? Well, in many ways there are things that can be learned and utilized from one’s military training in regular, everyday life. Anyone in the military knows and understands this.
But what about those of us who have never served a day? Well, we can still learn from those who have gone this path before, and today we here from such a one. Author Doug Wagner followed the advice of his father upon graduating high school and enrolled in the military. There, as a young man he went through officer training. The things he learned there, unbeknownst to him at the time, were lessons he would later apply in his everyday business ventures and leadership.
What sort of things, mind you? Perseverance in the face of adverse threats and situations. What does this mean? He developed a heart to problem solve no matter the situation, and to understand that there is always a way as long as he relies upon his training.
Well, though you may not be from a military background (as I am not), this is a skill that can be learned and utilized. Perhaps our initial skill-set will be a bit different from that of a military man, but the idea (or concept) is inherently the same. You have trained for your leadership via school…whether it is formal and/or the school of experience. Rely upon it, look to it and utilize it. And learn from experience to persevere.
There are two more things Mr. Wagner learned in his time of training in the military…two things that we too can utilize in our leadership today. Why don’t you hit the link and take a read?
