Microsoft’s Refresh

When Steve Ballmer stepped down as CEO of Microsoft, there was an audible, collective sigh in the boardroom. Yes, Ballmer was quite the CEO…very capable as well as very bombastic. This was most readily seen in his oft cited remarks regarding the iPhone and Android platform when they were first announced. In his characteristic fashion, he whole-heartedly dismissed them. Now look at where iPhone and Android are at today…and just how is that Windows Phone of yours doing? Yeah. That’s what I thought.

But, out with the old and in with the new. Ballmer is gone, and Nadella is here. As the new CEO of Microsoft, Nadella has had his missteps (yes, we all remember last month’s gaffe regarding women and pay raises)…but he’s on the rebound.

Today, news comes that Microsoft is partnering with the online storage platform known as Dropbox. The Verge reports that the two companies are partnering to form a deep integration for Microsoft’s products, namely their Office suite.

This partnership shows a new direction for Microsoft, now that it has come out from under the leadership of Ballmer. Again, Ballmer was quite capable…but he did lack respect for those around him. Nadella appears to respect and play nicely with others. So we see a new dawn, a refresh of a window, if you will…for the company.

Breathing new life in a company often comes with new leadership. Though you, yourself, are the CEO and leader of your company, this does not mean that you can’t place others in key positions of leadership around you. Such a placement may help you to refresh your own business as well.

Maybe it’s time to reboot.
