There are few things that can undercut a chief executive is effectively as self-doubt. Although the present pressures associated with the position can cause even the most self-assured person to experience some insecurity regarding their decisions and ambitions, it’s mission-critical that those feelings now expand to the point where they begin to affect performance.
The Inc. recently published article detailing how nine different strategies that can help an executive keep their self-doubt at a manageable level.
First up, is a suggestion that you take the focus off yourself and place it back on the work. At the end of the day, every CEO’s success and failure is determined by the performance of the companies they lead and dedicating energy to anything else is ultimately just a waste of time.
Another helpful tip is to actively resist the temptation to tell people what they want to hear. It’s incredibly easy to sniff out authenticity and once you’ve lost your teams respect, it’s nearly impossible to regain it. Also, it’s important to keep in mind that self-doubt is a natural response to trying new things and it’s useful to place feelings of insecurity within that context.
Thinking of self-doubt as as a sign that you’re pushing against complacency will rob it of much of its anxiety inducing power.
