If you want to be truly persuasive, don’t be afraid to take a few lessons from the classics. Greek and Roman rhetoricians made an art out of public speaking, and many of they core tenants still apply today. First, credit-ability is key when drawing in your audience. Second, don’t be afraid to make things personal, just not too personal. Third, don’t forget that even when you are presenting data, your audience isn’t always uneducated. This attention to the three rhetorical appeals – ethos, pathos, and logos – is fundamental to your success as a speaker. But, it is easier to learn than you think.
