Whether it be sports, team building workshops, life advice, or in the workplace, anytime someone who is perceived as being higher on the totem pole than you gives you advice or tells you how to do something, it could be called “coaching”. However the truth is that the art of coaching requires two things. Enhancing and rewarding positive improvement and reducing negative performance. There is a fine line between constructive criticism (coaching) and straight up coaching like you would do to a toddler who is acting up. If it is in a professional workplace a boss should always reinforce positive results with an incentive. If negative performance is all a boss is getting, then they should at least offer advice.
