In this hilarious and fascinating video, Wait But Why founder Tim Urban gives a Ted Talk detailing both his lifelong procrastination habit the dysfunctional thought processes that leads intelligent people with good judgment to procrastinate. Using a series of beautifully drawn stick figures, Urban illustrates how the rational decision-making part of a procrastinator’s brain is undermined by what he calls the instant-gratification monkey. He further explains how the instant-gratification monkey comes into conflict with the panic monster, and finally, his rather ingenious method of corralling these mythical creatures so that we can pursue our goals without having the specter of procrastination hanging over our heads. In brief, he suggests ordering your life around a calendar that is filled with tasks and benchmarks that start from the next day you wake up until the last night you lie down to sleep.
