In a lot of industries & societies, it has traditionally been a “mark of pride” by the number of work hours you put in.
However, that’s proving to be an archaic way of thinking about work.
The “work hard, play hard” mantra doesn’t hold anymore in this day and age. Burnout is a real thing.
McKinsey reports that when employers introduced “circuit breaker” holidays during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulted in boosts in employee mental health and morale.
It also resulted in higher productivity due to employee well-being (as a result of working less).
This also proves one of the points I’ve been trying to drive: managing employee performance, needs to adjust and change the metrics being measured. It’s not about the number of hours you spend in an office (which also does not truly indicate productiveness), it’s the output resulting from the work input that matters more.
