Here’s a way to get noticed…

…put up a bogus advertisement for an insane product that will cause a huge backlash in social media just so your products name will trend on twitter, #hash tags, and google.

Think it will never work? Think again, because that’s precisely what Pepsi-Co did with their “Dewitos” campaign on college campuses. What is it, you wonder? Try this on for size: Doritos-flavored Mountain Dew! yes, it leaves a terrible taste in our mouth as well.

This is a crossover campaign with the new Call of Duty game which recently released. And though it is seriously unlikely that the company ever had serious plans to release such a flavor, look at the PR stunt they accomplished…twitter was on fire, search engines went nuts with queries, and Pepsi-Co, Mountain Dew, and Doritos all rose in hits.

Note also where this stunt took place: on college campuses. There’s where the demographic is that they are hoping will buy into their product, which of course is not Dewitos, but rather Call of Duty, Mountain Dew, and Doritos. What will college kids do? They’ll talk with one another; they’ll say hey, did you hear about that flavor? And then they’ll say…let’s try it. They’ll buy liters of Mountain Dew and bags of Doritos. And Pepsi-Co will lean back and say, mission accomplished!


So, let me ask you…as you lead and grow your business, how are you getting your name out there on social media? Because that’s where the discussion is at…that’s your platform. How are you planning on using it, growing it, and manipulating it to get people talking about you and your company.  Do you see what Pepsi-Co did here? They worked the system. They worked the demographic. They caused a discussion.
