There are leaders who lead by leveraging fear.
There are leaders who manipulate and pit internal team members against one another (creating an environment of hostility, not healthy competition).
Luckily, not all leaders lead with this style.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, leaders who try to be everyone’s friend also doesn’t work – in the process of trying to please everyone, no decision or the best decision may not be made.
From Adam Grant:
People will follow leaders who create a common enemy, but they’re inspired by leaders who create a common vision.
The purpose of leadership is not to divide and conquer. It’s to unite people in service of a greater good.
