Tell-Tale Signs of Burnout

“‘I can’t do this anymore,’ I exclaimed as I burst into tears. Like a child who had just put a beloved pet to sleep, I buried my head into my mom’s shoulder and sobbed uncontrollably.

But I wasn’t a child. Far from it. I was actually a 22 year old investment banker, sporting my finest Brooks Brothers business casual (and living at home in an attempt to FIRE). It was 8 am and the birds were chirping. But I wasn’t waking up.

Instead, I was getting ready to go to bed, having just completed my first hazing ritual of a 36 hour work day. And I wanted out.”excerpt from The tell-tale signs of banker burnout, Khe Hy

While much of the spotlight about burnout and excessive work hours has been shone on the investment banking industry, I know the same kind of burnout and excessive work hours exist in many segments and industries.

The problem is while we all know there’s a problem, very little has been done to change the status quo.

In this post, Khey Hy, a former investment banker turned writer/creator, shares his framework for determining whether your current career is really serving you.

For me, working all-nighters (including studying) never made sense to me. I’d much rather have enough rest and be able to think clearly than to cram for something and still not remember much due to brain fog.

Performance whether at school or at work would be seriously hindered due to burnout.
