As leaders in commerce and business, one thing we need to be very cognizant of is the notion of trends. We need to be on the cusp of what is popular now, to be in touch with what people are seeking and searching for. Why?
Isn’t it enough for us to be leaders in our own industry? Why do we need to be looking at trends and, perhaps, even pander to those trends?
Well, that’s not quite what we are saying this morning. Take a look at this article by Bloomberg Businessweek on Kylie Jenner, the half-sister of Kim Kardashian.
To the general public, Kim Kardashian is the most well-known of the Kardashian clan. She is the one who first had the TV show and has the highly-publicized marriage to Kanye West. But when it comes to influence, it is young Kylie Jenner (the half-sister by the mother’s marriage to Bruce Jenner) who seems to be clearly the most influential of the Kardashian/Jenners’s in the very important teen- to young adult- segment.
Now, where the trending comes in is in seeing the influence that young Kylie Jenner has. How can such influence translate to business opportunity and new endeavors? Watching and tracking trends show us the interests people have and what is driving them to the market and commerce.
How can we market towards such trends and harness the power of not simply youth, but popularity, trends, and patterns? Perhaps this is a question we should ask more as we prepare our business for the future, and future generations.
